What Does It Take To Slash 600km In The APY Lands?

APY Lands, SA • June 2026

At first glance, roadside slashing sounds simple – load up the tractors, send out the operators and get to work. But delivering a large-scale roadside vegetation management project in the far north-west corner of South Australia is anything but straightforward.

Working on behalf of the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT), our team completed over 600 kilometres of roadside slashing and vegetation management over a five-week period in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands. Due to unusually high rainfall, our services were required to control unseasonal vegetation growth, improve visibility at intersections, and reduce fire risk ahead of the warmer months.

Reaching site required a 15-hour, 1,400-kilometre journey from our Adelaide Hills depot before work could even begin. Operating in one of Australia's most remote regions meant every detail had to be planned, from fuel, food and water to accommodation, communications and equipment maintenance.

Using two tractors fitted with flail mulchers, along with pole saws and chainsaws to remove overhanging vegetation, our rotating eight-person crew worked efficiently across the APY Lands while adapting to the demands of a challenging and ever-changing environment.

Success also relied on working closely with Traditional Owners and respecting the unique requirements of the region. Our team obtained the necessary Aboriginal land access permits before work commenced and supported local businesses by sourcing services and supplies within the APY communities wherever possible.

Despite logistical and operational challenges, including fuel shortages, flooded roads and flat tyres, we completed the project to a high standard with zero safety incidents. That outcome reflects the planning, communication and safety culture our team brings to every project, no matter how remote or complex.

Whether you're managing a government contract or commercial infrastructure project, we have the experience, equipment and capability to tackle complex vegetation management projects safely, efficiently and to a high standard. Contact our team to discuss your upcoming works.
