Replanting the Future at Mount Crawford
Mount Crawford Forest, SA • July 2024
Recently, our team completed a large-scale tree planting project at Mount Crawford for ForestrySA - a key player in South Australia's sustainable forest management.
This project involved re-establishing a commercial pine plantation following recent harvesting activities. Over 50,000 seedlings were hand-planted by our dedicated crew of 4-8 members, working across steep, wet, and windswept terrain. Timing was critical - too early and the soil would be dry; too late and the conditions would become too cold and saturated. Our team navigated this narrow planting window with precision, ensuring maximum planting success.
Safety was paramount throughout the project. The rugged environment and winter weather presented several risks, which were managed through comprehensive site assessments, pre-start meetings, and dynamic team coordination. Despite the challenging conditions, the project was completed without incident.
Flexibility and teamwork were key to our success. Our ability to scale the crew size, adjust to daily weather conditions, and maintain a high level of planting accuracy allowed us to meet ForestrySA’s requirements on time and to a high standard.
The results so far have been excellent, with high seedling survival rates indicating a strong start for this new generation of pine forest. We're proud to contribute to the ongoing sustainability and regeneration of South Australia's forest resources.
